Safety at Sharp

The purpose of this training is to provide awareness of
common workplace hazards and how to report and
mitigate those hazards.

Workplace Safety ▼

  • Sharp HealthCare monitors adherence to the Injury & Illness Prevention (IIPP) objectives and maintains a safe work environment through observation of work practices, correction of hazards and communication with staff regarding opportunities for improvement.
  • Your Safety Officer, in conjunction with your site’s Safety Committee and the System Environment of Care Committee, implements, monitors and evaluates the Safety Management and Injury & Illness Prevention Plans.
  • Safety committees and their membership communicate pertinent information to staff and management.

Detection & Communication of Hazards ▼

  • A healthy and safe work environment is the responsibility of all employees and requires the active participation of all employees. We must work together to identify and correct workplace hazards which may jeopardize our safety or that of our co-workers or patients.
  • There are several mechanisms available for the communication of workplace hazards. Most recently, employees can report potentially unhealthy working conditions or safety-related suggestions using RL solutions.
  • Always report hazards immediately.

Immediate Notification

Your work environment should remain safe at all times. If you encounter a practice, behavior and/or physical condition which you think is unsafe or which presents the potential for injury or harm, correct the hazard if possible or contact your Manager, Supervisor or your Safety Officer.

Written Notification

If the unsafe condition cannot be immediately addressed through verbal contact, document your concerns and route them to appropriate individuals for response:
  • Complete a work order and submit to Engineering, or
  • Fill out a W.I.S.H. Report on RL Solutions and submit to your Safety Officer.

Detection of Workplace Hazards ▼

Whenever dangerous, unhealthy or unsafe conditions are discovered, Sharp HealthCare will take prompt action to correct the condition.

Routine Area Inspections
To exercise safe work practices, all employees must actively participate in continuous evaluation of processes, equipment and the environment
in which they work. It is the expectation of the Safety Management and Injury & Illness Prevention Plan that inspection and evaluation of the environment will occur during daily workplace activities.

Safe Patient Mobilization ▼

Safe patient handling or mobilization is the replacement of manual lifting and transferring of patients with powered transfer devices, lifting devices, and lift teams (as appropriate) based on patient and RN assessment.

Patient mobilization includes:

  • Lifting: vertical movement of a patient or the support of part or all of a patient’s body
  • Mobilizing: putting/assisting into movement part or all of a patient’s body
  • Repositioning: changing patient’s position on a bed, gurney, chair or other support surface
  • Transferring: moving a patient from one surface to another

Slips, Trips & Falls ▼

Slips, trips, and falls are an everyday risk at hospitals and comprise one of the top accident categories. The operations that exist within the health care  landscape present unique and significant challenges and risk to employees in the industry.

Blood/Body Fluid Exposures ▼

Transmission of bloodborne pathogens (e.g., HIV, Hepatitis B) from patients to healthcare workers is an important occupational hazard faced by healthcare staff and can occur when employees are exposed to blood/body fluid by needlestick or splashes. As part of establishing a safe environment for employees and patients, Sharp HealthCare has minimized the risk for work-related exposure to blood borne pathogens by implementing infection control practices and by providing guidelines for the prevention of blood/body fluid exposures, sharps injuries and splash exposures. This includes the safe handling of sharps and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Safe Work Practices ▼

Ergonomics is the science of fitting the job to the employee. The goal of the Sharp Ergonomics Program is to reduce work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), also known as repetitive motion disorders.

MSDs develop when a major part of an employee’s work task involves repetitive motion, reaching, waist bending, mobilizing patients or lifting heavy objects.

The Sharp Ergonomics Program recognizes that posture, safe patient mobilizations, body mechanics and work activities play an important role in identifying risk factors associated with on-the-job injuries.

Critical Illness ▼

Administered by MetLife

Many employees have had a family member, friend or acquaintance impacted by the physical, emotional and financial effects of a critical illness such as a colleague diagnosed with cancer, a parent who has suffered a stroke, or a loved one who had a heart attack. Living with a critical illness may affect your financial security and that of your family. Despite having good medical insurance, there are still expenses associated with a critical illness that many medical plans do not cover such as medical copays and deductibles, out-of-net-work treatments, prescription drug co-pays, childcare bills, mortgage and rent payments, car payments, utility payments and other household bills. Critical illness Insurance can help give you the peace of mind needed to concentrate on recovery instead of finances.

Eligibility

Eligible dependents include:

  • Dependent child/children under age 26

If you are happy with your current choices for benefits, you do not have to re-enroll. Your 2020 elections will automatically carry over to 2021, with the exception of Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). If you wish to participate in an FSA in 2021, you will need to access Lawson Web to make an election.
